Mogis, whose work during that era included The Faint, Bright Eyes, and Cursive, The Radio Goodnight represents the culmination of the years M.I.J. spent growing up together as a band—from three middle-school friends learning songs in Wisconsin basements to a sound that had become increasingly melodic, atmospheric, and emotionally direct. The album captures the range the trio had developed by that point: loud and propulsive in places, restrained and intimate in others, anchored throughout by Jeff Hanson’s unmistakable voice and the dynamics of a three-piece that had been playing together for nearly a decade. The record also provides a glimpse of what would come next for Hanson. Two songs, “Sometimes In Sleep” and “Again Today,” were Jeff’s compositions, pointing toward the quieter, more intimate songwriting he would soon pursue in his solo career. Originally released by Caulfield Records in 2000, The Radio Goodnight was the final M.I.J. album. More than 25 years later, Bernie McGinn was able to unearth the original Radio Goodnight master tapes tucked away in storage, opening the door to a new edition of the record. For the 2026 reissue, Dan Coutant at Sun Room Audio remastered the album from the original tapes. For the first time since its original release, The Radio Goodnight is available on two limited-edition colored vinyl variants, pressed on heavyweight 180-gram vinyl. The album is also available on CD in a digisleeve package and, for the first time ever, on cassette. All artwork for these new editions has been adapted from scans of the original artwork by Simon Tripcony, carefully prepared for the new physical releases.
