Carex leavenworthii (Leavenworth's Sedge)
Leavenworth's Sedge is excellent for unimproved or natural areas. It is cold hardy and drought tolerant once established. It is semi-evergreen and it can be used as a turf substitute. It grows in grassland, woodland, and woodland-edge habitats and tolerates part sun, part shade, and shade, which makes it flexible in the landscape. It adapts to clay, sand, and gravelly soils and has medium water needs. It looks very similar to Webberville Sedge (Carex perdentata) but Leavenworth's Sedge tolerates drier conditions. It still prefers to be protected from later afternoon sun. Like all sedges, it will tolerate mowing as long as you don't mow too short. Keep the mowing above 4" and mow just once a season.
