Victron - SmartSolar MPPT 75/10 Solar Charge Controller (75V max PV, 10A, Bluetooth) - SCC075010060R
The Victron SmartSolar MPPT 75/10 is a 10A maximum power point tracking solar charge controller for 12V and 24V systems, and it is one of the few in the range with real load terminals. It tracks the panel's maximum power point continuously, converts the excess voltage into charge current, and runs a multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm that you can override entirely if your battery calls for it. Peak efficiency is 98 percent. Bluetooth is built in, so setup and monitoring happen in VictronConnect on your phone with no dongle to buy. This is the smallest controller in the SmartSolar line and it is aimed squarely at compact builds - a single panel on a camper trailer, a caravan top-up array, a boat, a shed, a remote gate or pump. If your array is one panel and your loads are lights and a small fridge, this is the model. Larger arrays step up to the 75/15, and higher-voltage strings step up to the 100V and 150V families. How much solar can you run on a 75/10? Two numbers govern it, and most people only check the first one. Panel wattage: 145W at 12V, or 290W at 24V. That is the nominal PV power the controller will convert. You can connect a larger array than that - the controller simply limits its output to 10A and clips the surplus - but you are paying for panel you cannot use, so treat 145W at 12V as the sensible ceiling. Array open circuit voltage: this is the harder limit. Maximum PV open circuit voltage is 75V, and maximum PV short circuit current is 10A. Open circuit voltage is not a fixed number - it climbs as panel temperature falls, so a panel that reads well under 75V on a hot afternoon can push higher on a cold morning. Read the Voc figure off your panel label, add headroom for cold weather, and keep the total under 75V. On a single 12V-nominal panel this is rarely an issue. If you are wiring two panels in series to chase the voltage, do the cold-weather sum before you buy. It has a physical load output - and most MPPTs do not This matters, because the bigger SmartSolar models do not have one. The 75/10 has genuine load terminals rated at 15A continuous. You can wire lights, a small fridge or a USB panel directly to the controller and it will power them, no relay and no extra hardware. The point of the load output is not convenience, it is battery protection. The controller disconnects the load before the battery is flattened. Low voltage load disconnect is selectable at 11.1V or 11.8V, or you can hand it to the BatteryLife algorithm. Reconnect is 13.1V or 14V, or BatteryLife again. BatteryLife is the smarter choice for lead acid - it adapts the disconnect threshold day by day so the battery is not repeatedly left sitting at a deep state of discharge, which is what actually kills them. On a small build this saves you a separate low voltage disconnect module and the wiring that goes with it. The bit no one explains: VE.Smart Networking A Smart Battery Sense, SmartShunt or BMV-712 measures voltage and temperature right at the battery terminals and broadcasts those readings over Bluetooth. The 75/10 listens and re-tunes its charge voltage off that reading instead of its own terminals. Here is why it matters. The controller sits at the end of a cable. Under charge current, that cable drops voltage, so the controller always reads slightly higher than the battery actually is. It thinks the battery is fuller than it is, so it backs off early, every single time. Feed it a real battery-side reading and the battery actually reaches full. Synchronised charging is supported as well. Run more than one SmartSolar MPPT - a roof array and a portable panel on separate controllers, for example - and over the same VE.Smart network they move through bulk, absorption and float together instead of arguing with each other. A network takes up to 10 devices, but only one sense source is allowed. One sensor, many chargers. Key features Ultra fast maximum power point tracking - particularly effective in cloudy conditions where irradiance is changing constantly Peak efficiency of 98 percent - very little of what the panel makes is lost in conversion Physical load output, 15A continuous - run lights or a small fridge straight off the controller BatteryLife load disconnect - adapts the cut-off day by day rather than repeatedly deep-cycling the battery Automatic 12V or 24V battery voltage selection - set on first power up Multi-stage adaptive charge algorithm, or fully user defined if your battery has its own numbers Equalisation is disabled by default - it is there if your flooded lead acid bank needs it, and off if it does not Bluetooth built in - configure, monitor and update firmware from VictronConnect on your phone VE.Direct port for a wired connection to a GX device or a PC VE.Smart Networking - voltage and temperature sense over Bluetooth, plus synchronised charging with other SmartSolar controllers Very low self consumption - 20mA at 12V, 10mA at 24V Protected against PV reverse polarity, output short circuit and over temperature Mounting it - read this before you pick a spot This is an indoor unit. Protection category is IP43 for the electronics and IP22 for the connection area. It is not sealed. Do not mount it in an engine bay, in a wheel arch, under a tray, or anywhere it will see rain, road spray or dust. Inside the canopy, inside the caravan, in a dry locker or on a shed wall is what it is built for. Mount it vertically, with the terminals facing downwards. Not on its back, not on its side. Mount it on a non-flammable substrate. The heatsink gets warm. Leave clear air above and below the unit for convection cooling. Boxing it in costs you output on hot days. Mount it within 3 metres of the battery, but never directly above it. Close, for voltage drop. Not above, because batteries vent. Do not mount it in a user-accessible area. Live terminals. Power terminals accept 6mm2 (AWG10) cable. Size your run for length and current, not just for the terminal. Get the battery polarity right the first time. Reverse battery polarity blows an internal fuse that is not practically user-replaceable. Check twice before you connect. The WireBox-S 75-10/15 terminal cover fits this model if you want the connection area shrouded. Sold separately. Connection order matters too. Battery first, then PV. Disconnect in reverse. The other limit is voltage: total array open circuit voltage must stay under 75V, and open circuit voltage rises as the panels get cold. Check the Voc figure on your panel label and leave headroom for a cold morning. Is it waterproof? Can I mount it in the engine bay? No. Protection category is IP43 for the electronics and IP22 for the connection area. That is an indoor rating. It must not be mounted in an engine bay or anywhere exposed to rain, road spray or dust. Mount it in a dry, ventilated space inside the vehicle, van or building. Can I run my lights and fridge straight off the controller? Yes. The 75/10 has a physical load output rated at 15A continuous, which is enough for LED lighting and a small fridge. It will disconnect the load to protect the battery - the cut-out is selectable at 11.1V or 11.8V, or you can use the BatteryLife algorithm, which adapts the threshold rather than letting the battery sit deeply discharged. Will it charge lithium batteries? Yes. The charge algorithm is multi-stage adaptive or fully user defined, and absorption and float voltages are adjustable, so you can enter the numbers your battery manufacturer specifies. Equalisation is disabled by default, which is what you want on lithium - leave it off. My panel is connected but the controller shows nothing. Is it faulty? Almost certainly not. PV voltage has to exceed battery voltage plus 5V for the controller to start, and then stay above battery voltage plus 1V to keep running. In weak light a panel simply does not get there, so the controller sits idle and reports nothing. That is normal behaviour, not a fault. What size cable do the terminals take? The power terminals accept 6mm2 (AWG10). Mount the controller within 3 metres of the battery to keep voltage drop down, but never directly above the battery. Do I need a Bluetooth dongle to set it up? No. Bluetooth is built in. Install VictronConnect on your phone and you can set the charge profile, watch live yield and update firmware. There is also a VE.Direct port for a wired connection to a GX device or a PC.
