Two Door Crackled Blue Lacquer Sideboard

Gansu, circa 1920 This substantial sideboard from Gansu dates from the early twentieth century and has been converted from an old grain storage chest. Its newly applied blue crackled finish combines soft blue and pale cream with darker brown tones, creating a richly textured surface. The broad, plain panels allow the variations in colour and fine crackled texture to stand out, while thick outer frames give definition to the simple frontage. The original fixed front panels have been adapted into two large doors and fitted with new metal drop handles, providing easy access to the generous cupboard space. The inside contains a single shelf, offering plenty of room for tableware, glasses and other household items. A central supporting foot and gently shaped apron add interest to the sideboard’s long, low proportions. A lovely focal point for a dining room, living room or bedroom, the sideboard offers ample storage alongside a broad display surface for lamps, photo frames and favourite ornaments. Its softly varied colours would sit beautifully with natural wood and neutral fabrics, bringing texture and antique character to the room.
