Vietnamese Vanilla Bean Orchid 4" Pot

Vietnamese Vanilla Bean Orchid — 4" Pot Botanical name: Vanilla planifolia Family: Orchidaceae Plant type: Tropical evergreen climbing orchid Bring a touch of the tropics to your collection with this climbing vanilla orchid. Thick, glossy green leaves and aerial roots give this unusual vine year-round appeal. Train it onto a moss pole or trellis in a warm, bright room or greenhouse. This is the species grown for culinary vanilla beans. Mature vines may produce yellow-green orchid flowers under suitable conditions, followed by vanilla pods after successful pollination. Flowering and bean production require patience and are not guaranteed indoors. Care instructions Light: Bright, indirect light or filtered shade. Protect from harsh afternoon sun. Water: Keep the growing medium lightly moist, allowing the surface to begin drying between waterings. Water thoroughly and drain completely. Growing medium: An airy, moisture-retentive mix containing orchid bark, sphagnum moss or coco coir, and perlite. Use a pot with drainage holes. Temperature: Prefers 70–90°F. Keep warm and protect from cold drafts and frost. Humidity: High humidity with gentle air circulation. Fertilizer: Feed with diluted orchid fertilizer during active growth, following label directions. Support: Provide a moss pole, trellis, or other climbing support as the vine grows. Hardiness: USDA Zones 10–11 in warm, frost-free locations. Grow indoors or in a heated greenhouse in colder climates. Mature size: A vigorous vine capable of growing 30 feet or more in tropical conditions; train and prune to manage its size. Flowers and beans: Young plants commonly need several years to reach flowering size. Hand pollination is usually needed for pods, which must be cured to develop familiar vanilla flavor. Pot size: 4-inch nursery pot. Pot size does not indicate vine length.
