Hand-Drawn Checks Ko-Imari porcelain comes from Arita, home to Japan's first porcelain kilns and known for its cobalt-blue sometsuke decoration. Soba choko of this type are generally associated with the late Edo and Meiji periods. This cup reflects their everyday character in hand-drawn checks of bero-ai blue, each square slightly different. A key-fret border circles the rim, while a swiftly painted mikomi motif of pine, bamboo, and plum decorates the interior well. Rejoined in Urushi, Finished in Roiro Keiko Hata restored this broken cup over four months. A lacquer artist who holds a Master's degree in Lacquer Arts from Kyoto City University of Arts, she also conserves Buddhist sculpture. She rejoined the fragments with natural urushi, filled the damaged areas, and built and polished the restored surface until level. She then sprinkled 24K marufun (spherical gold powder) over these areas in the maki-e manner and sealed it with a thin coat of raw urushi into one durable layer. The final roiro finish demands meticulous, skilled hand-polishing, lending the gold a rich, deep luster. Food-safe, the cup remains suitable for sake. A Pattern Worth Preserving Hand-painted blue checks give this Ko-Imari soba choko the gentle irregularity of traditional craftsmanship. Against their measured rhythm, the 24K gold kintsugi lines form a freer composition and add depth to the geometry. Porcelain painting and urushi artistry meet in a modest vessel worth appreciating beyond its original purpose. Food-safe for occasional use, it is equally suited to display, and whoever keeps it holds both traditions together, along with Hata's four months of patient, skilled restoration.
