Mauchline Ware Spool Box Dated 1866, Lovers Seat Scotland, with Note of Provenance
This Mauchline Ware spool box features the “Lovers Seat” scene and, based on the handwritten note on the bottom, dates to 1866. Mauchline Ware is so named because it was produced in or near a small town called Mauchline in Scotland. It is made of sycamore and often had transfer photos of popular tourist destinations. It was produced from the mid 1800’s until 1933 when the last Mauchline Ware factory was destroyed by fire. There is a handwritten note on the bottom that reads: "Bought in 1866 in West Chester, Pa. by Elizabeth Payson 6 years old - for a Christmas gift to her mother, price $1.25” The box opens easily and the hinge works well. All six bone eyelets are in place. Inside, all of the spool holders are present, along with the original label inside the lid. The interior lining shows wear consistent with age, and there is some lining missing as shown in the photos. Overall, the box remains in very good condition. Two spools of thread are included—one silk and one cotton. Measures 2" tall, 4.5" wide, and 3" deep. *Featured item only included in sale, other items are my photo helpers :-)
