Composer: Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) Editor: Wolfgang Stockmeier Instrumentation: Orchestra Work: Symphony in D Major, Hob. I:61 Binding: Saddle-Stitch ISMN: 9790006580279 Size: 9.6 x 12.2 inches Pages: 53 Urtext / Critical Edition Description In 1776, around ten years after Haydn took up his position at the Esterházy Palace, he composed his Symphony in D Major, Hob. I:61. Compared to the symphonies of the early 1770s, this work stands out for its richer woodwind sound. By this time, the princely court orchestra had been expanded for opera productions, which enabled Haydn to use not only two bassoon parts but also, for the first time, a flute part in all four movements; as of April 1776, a flautist had once again played in the court orchestra after a long absence. This is the only symphony from the years 1774 to 1776 for which Haydn's autograph score has survived. The edition is based on this primary source.
