The Great Fire of 1910, known in the American West simply as “the Big Blowup,” was the most catastrophic wildfire in United States history, consuming approximately three million acres across Idaho, Montana, and Washington over the course of a single terrifying August weekend. Driven by hurricane-force winds and fueled by a summer of severe drought, the fire killed 85 people and incinerated entire towns, including the Idaho communities of Wallace and Avery. The disaster had a profound and lasting impact on the nation’s approach to forest management, galvanizing political support for the fledgling U.S. Forest Service and entrenching a policy of aggressive fire suppression that would shape land management practices for the better part of the twentieth century.
