Cal Tjader - Warm Wave
Cal Tjader holds a unique position in the history of jazz as the preeminent non-Latino leader of Latin jazz ensembles. With the 1964 release of Warm Wave, Tjader moved into a more lush and cinematic territory by collaborating with the esteemed arranger and conductor Claus Ogerman. This session represents a sophisticated intersection where the cool clarity of Tjader’s vibraphone meets a polished orchestral backdrop. Recorded over several dates in May and June at the legendary A and R and Van Gelder Studios, the album features a stellar cast of musicians including guitarists Kenny Burrell and Jim Raney along with the rhythmic foundation of George Duvivier and Ed Shaughnessy. The result is a collection of performances that prioritize atmosphere and melody, capturing a specific mid-sixties aesthetic that remains both timeless and incredibly inviting for the modern listener.
