Icon of Saint Dionysius the Areopagite — Hieromartyr, First Bishop of Athens, Disciple of the Apostle Paul | Handcrafted Orthodox Icon Saint Dionysius the Areopagite is one of the most remarkable figures of the early Christian Church — a man who heard the Apostle Paul preach on the hill of the Areopagus in Athens, believed, and gave the rest of his life entirely to Christ. A judge at the Areopagus Court in Athens, Dionysius was converted to Christianity by the preaching of the Apostle Paul — an encounter described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 17:34). From a position of power and learning, he chose faith. After his conversion, Dionysius became the first Bishop of Athens, shepherding the earliest Christian community in the city that was then the intellectual capital of the ancient world. He is venerated as a saint in both the Catholic and the Eastern Orthodox Churches, and is the patron saint of Athens, venerated as the protector of judges and the judiciary. His memory is celebrated on October 3. The theological legacy of Dionysius shaped Christian thought for over a millennium. Throughout the Middle Ages, his writings remained deeply influential in both East and West, and he ranked among the most frequently cited Patristic authorities by eminent theologians Thomas Aquinas and Gregory Palamas. This handcrafted icon depicts Saint Dionysius in the traditional manner, vested as a bishop and holding a Gospel Book — the image of a shepherd who received the Word directly from the Apostolic generation and carried it forward at the cost of his life. The iconographic type follows the mosaic tradition of the Byzantine monastery of Hosios Loukas in Greece, one of the oldest surviving representations of this saint.
