Sometimes the best thread on a fly is the thread you don’t see. Wapsi Monofil is low-visibility nylon fly-tying material made for situations where you want your wraps to stay out of the way and let the actual fly materials do the talking. Instead of adding a bold thread color to the pattern, Monofil keeps wraps subtle so flash, synthetics, hair, body materials, and painted eyes remain the focus. For saltwater tiers, that makes it especially useful for shrimp flies, crab patterns, small baitfish imitations, sparse streamers, Clouser-style flies, and other patterns where transparency, translucency, or a clean finished profile matters. It is also a great choice for tying in dumbbell eyes when you want to secure them without surrounding them with an obvious band of conventional thread. We carry Wapsi Monofil in Clear and Smoke, giving you two different ways to keep your thread wraps understated. Clear is the choice when you want the wraps to virtually disappear into light, translucent, or brightly colored materials. Smoke adds a subtle darker tint that can blend nicely into darker baitfish patterns, crab flies, shrimp flies, and other flies where completely clear thread may stand out more than you want. Monofil can also be used for ribbing, body work, securing materials, and other tying jobs where a low-visibility wrap is an advantage. It is not meant to replace every spool of conventional tying thread on your bench, but when visible thread is getting in the way of the finished pattern, this is exactly the kind of material you want to have handy. We carry two diameters so you can match the material to the job: .004" – The finer option for smaller flies, delicate ribbing, sparse baitfish patterns, shrimp flies, crab flies, and applications where minimal bulk is the priority. .006" – A heavier option for larger patterns and jobs where you want a little more material and holding power while keeping the same low-visibility look. If you spend time building a translucent or carefully colored fly only to cover it with a bunch of obvious thread wraps, you are kind of defeating the purpose.
