Aspidistra elatior earned the name cast iron plant in Victorian hallways — gaslight, coal smoke, cold draughts — and nothing since has managed to kill it. Long, deep-green blades from the base, slow-growing, and completely safe for cats and dogs.Best space & placeShade to medium light; it is the plant for the corner nothing else will live in. Keep it out of direct sun, which bleaches the leaves. Anything above 7°C is fine, so unheated hallways and porches suit it.When to water & feedWater when the soil is dry a good way down — every two to three weeks is typical. Feed a couple of times a year at most.Need to knowWipe the leaves occasionally; that is the entire maintenance schedule. Brown tips usually mean it has been standing in water. Slow, so buy the size you want.Decorative pots not included. The plant will be delivered in a plastic nursery pot.
