Bronze Mind by Koji Hatakeyama
Forty years of working with bronze. The collected work of metal artist Koji Hatakeyama, from his studio in Takaoka to museums around the world. "青銅の意識": the consciousness of bronze. For Hatakeyama, bronze is never just a material. It carries a memory of its own, and a work begins where that memory meets his. Takaoka, in Toyama Prefecture, has long been a town of metal casting. Hatakeyama opened his studio there in 1985, after studying at Kanazawa College of Art, and has worked from it ever since. Over four decades, his practice has moved between art and spatial work, always returning to the question of what bronze can be. His pieces are now held by the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. This book follows that path through the works themselves, his exhibitions and projects around the world, and the thinking behind them. It is presented in both Japanese and English.
