NV ‘Initial’ Grand Cru (2019 base vintage) Jacques Selosse - Avize
From Avize, the Côte des Blancs’ chalky Chardonnay heartland, Jacques Selosse’s ‘Initial’ is anything but entry-level Champagne. The blend marries Grand Cru Chardonnay from Avize, Cramant and Oger, with the lower slopes bringing richer, clay-influenced soils. The Selosse estate covers around 8.3 hectares across 54 parcels, with vines averaging over 55 years old; Anselme Selosse famously pioneered oak fermentation and terroir-focused grower Champagne, with son Guillaume now at the helm. The 2019 base vintage brings ripe fruit, concentration and balancing freshness. Expect baked apple, pear, honey, toasted nuts, spice and a savoury, mineral finish. Pair with roast chicken, lobster, Comté or mushroom risotto.
