Sharps New Model 1863 Carbine with Pellet Primer System Sharps New Model 1863 carbine retaining its pellet primer system, attractive brown patina, and clearly marked barrel. The steel surfaces exhibit a smooth brown finish with areas of gray showing through on the receiver, complementing the aged wooden stock and forearm. The receiver tang bears serial number “C,7194.” The barrel is marked “SHARPS RIFLE MANUFG. CO. HARTFORD CONN.” forward of the rear sight, with “NEW MODEL 1863” behind it. The left receiver frame retains the marking “SHARPS PAT. SEPT. 12TH 1848,” while markings on the right side are no longer visible. The rear sight remains intact, including its elevation slide, and the left-side sling ring is present. The lever operates smoothly to lower the breechblock. According to the accompanying condition notes, the hammer holds securely at both half-cock and full-cock, and the bore retains crisp, clean rifling. The triangular lever latch remains present. The buttstock and forearm are intact and solid, showing scattered dents, dings, and scratches consistent with age and use. A chip or dent is present on the lower right side of the forearm immediately behind the barrel band, with another on the underside of the buttstock approximately two inches forward of the buttplate. The forearm screw and barrel-band spring remain in place. A handsome example of the iconic Sharps carbine, offering strong markings, pleasing aged surfaces, and the distinctive features of the New Model 1863.
