Over more than four centuries, the company has built its name on blending traditional Japanese incense-making with modern tastes, and it’s now a familiar presence in shops around the world. Its flagship line, Morning Star, is a staple for many people new to Japanese incense, offering approachable scents like sandalwood, cedarwood, and jasmine. For more refined tastes, the Kayuragi and Kyara lines draw on precious woods such as aloeswood (agarwood) and sandalwood, prized for their depth and subtle sweetness. Nippon Kodo’s sticks are generally known for their gentle, clean burn and restrained fragrance, in keeping with the Japanese practice of kōdō, the “way of incense,” where scent is appreciated as a quiet, contemplative experience rather than an overpowering one.
