There are complications associated with particular watchmakers, and then there is the tourbillon and Abraham-Louis Breguet. Patented by Breguet in 1801, the rotating regulating organ was conceived to counteract the effects of gravity on a pocket watch's escapement. More than two centuries later, it remains one of mechanical watchmaking’s most celebrated complications. The Classique Tourbillon Ref. 3657BA/12/9V6 places that invention at the center of a watch that is unmistakably Breguet. Its 39mm 18K yellow-gold case features the manufacture’s familiar fluted caseband and straight welded lugs, framing a solid-gold dial that has been silvered and decorated by hand with multiple guilloché patterns. A tremendous amount is happening on that dial, but the organization is remarkably graceful. The off-center time display at 12 o’clock features Roman numerals and thermally blued, open-tipped Breguet hands. At 9 sits a sector-shaped power-reserve indicator, balanced at 3 by a distinctive 24-hour day/night display marked Heures Diurnes. And at 6 o’clock, occupying the most prominent position of all, is the exposed one-minute tourbillon, its rotating carriage also carrying the running-seconds indication. Powering it is the manually wound Calibre 560.1, operating at a traditional 18,000 vibrations per hour and offering roughly 50 hours of power reserve. The movement incorporates a Breguet overcoil hairspring and extensive hand finishing, while the sapphire exhibition caseback reveals an elaborately engraved movement architecture that is every bit as decorative as the dial. That relationship between mechanics and decoration is really the point. The 3657 is complicated without being technical or ornate, yet retains its sense of order. Guilloché isn’t merely decoration here; different patterns help visually separate each indication, turning a potentially crowded display into something remarkably coherent. This example is paired with a black alligator leather strap and a signed 18K yellow-gold deployant clasp. It is accompanied by its inner and outer boxes, and a Certificate of Origin from the 2010s. For all its additional indications, the star remains exactly where it should be: at 6 o’clock, turning once every minute. More than 200 years after Breguet patented the tourbillon, few watches make a more convincing argument for why his invention still matters.
