About Sumava All of our fantastic Costa Rican coffees come directly from Exclusive Coffees, which means they have control over almost all of the process of getting the coffee to us, including doing their own exporting and importing. This operation was founded by Francisco Mena who also owns and operates a few farms and the Sumava de Lourdes Micromill where he processes a handful of varieties he grows. This is a traditional washed process coffee, which actually is not-so-typical for Costa Rican coffees since they use so many different versions of the honey process! It’s 100% Villa Sarchi variety, a natural mutation of the well-known bourbon plant. There’s just a single-gene mutation that causes the plant to grow smaller, also called ‘dwarf/compactism. It’s a variety that was actually discovered in Costa Rica in the 1960s and it’s mostly grown within the country. Costa Rican coffees are some of our favorites and you love them too! They’re consistently some of our best-sellers. We’ve been so fortunate to work with producers like Francisco who continually bring us the best. Earlier this year, a few of us traveled to Costa Rica and got to taste this coffee with the producers before we selected it to share with all of you!
