Which size should I choose? Tape the two pieces together before you paint How to paint a lawn stencil Paint on dry grass on a calm day. Freshly mowed grass gives the crispest shape. Lay the stencil flat and pin or weigh down the corners so it stays put. Spray lawn marking paint in light passes, holding the can close to the stencil. An upside-down (inverted tip) marking can is easiest. Lift the stencil straight up, move it and repeat. Rinse the stencil with water before the paint dries, then dry it flat or roll it up for next year.
