I’ve been a fan of the paintings of Edward Seago for many years. My father and I would often go through one of the catalogues of his paintings, usually from one of the galleries exhibiting his work. We would discuss different aspects of his painting techniques, admiring the freshness of his brush strokes. It didn’t matter if it was an oil painting or a watercolour, Seago’s paintings looked effortless. This was the effect we wanted to achieve in our own paintings. I’ve sometimes used Seago as an example of an artist for my pupils to try to emulate. The Pink House, Venice is a great starting point to have ago. I love Edward Seago’s overseas work. I was recently drawn to his oil painting of the “Wells of Marrakech” painted in the 1960’s. Whilst going through some of my father’s paintings, I came across a tinted canvas board, similar in size to Seago’s painting of Marrakech. I decided to have a go at doing my own version. You can see how he was inspired by the dramatic sunlight and dark contrasting shadows. By tinting the whole board an almost orange colour, it helps to add heat to the colours, even in the brilliant blue for the sky.
