Oversized Moroccan Vintage Rug

Overview: This vintage Beni Mguild rug is reminscent of old, traditional Moroccan rugs and feels luxurious underfoot! It's heavy too, which is a good indicator of how densely woven it is. Like most Beni Mguild rugs, these pieces are fully reversible. In Morocco, when the cozy side of the rug faces up, we call it the winter side of the rug. Come summer, we might flip the rug over to the flat underside. This rug features an interior full of tessellating diamonds, against a backdrop of maroon and black checkers. The border appears on three sides of this rug and is unique in that it is not entirely consistent from one side to the other. This is common in Moroccan weaving. Often weavers will add inconsistencies to their rugs, based on a belief that 'only Allah is perfect.' These irregularities are the artisans' attempts to confuse the evil eye and deflect the envy of the neighbors. Whether the weaver was protecting the baraka of the rug or the inconsistencies in shapes and colors are due to the weaver's own creative impulse, the outcome is still captivating.
