Manly Pavilion, Harbour Pool and Promenade, 1930s – Lost Manly Historic Reimagined Built in 1930–31 by the Port Jackson & Manly Steamship Company (PJSSCo), the Manly Harbour Pool and Promenade formed part of an ambitious vision to transform Manly into one of Australia’s premier seaside holiday and recreation destinations. Officially opened in 1931, the elegant pavilion, tea rooms and harbour baths quickly became a beloved landmark, attracting generations of swimmers, tourists and day-trippers arriving by ferry across Sydney Harbour. For more than four decades, the pool stood as a symbol of Manly’s golden era of seaside leisure until disaster struck in 1974, when severe storms and the wreck of the cargo ship Sygna sent huge quantities of timber debris and heavy seas crashing into the structure. The promenade and pool were extensively damaged and ultimately demolished — never to be rebuilt. This gently restored and reimagined artwork preserves the memory of one of Manly’s most treasured lost landmarks.
