Developed following the 2019–2020 Black Summer bushfires, the ReHabitat Pod was created to address a critical challenge in ecological recovery: the loss of ground-level habitat structure needed by native fauna. The Pod provides an immediate refuge for ground-dwelling reptiles, small mammals, birds and invertebrates while natural vegetation and habitat complexity recover. Its internal compartments create multiple shelter spaces, helping mimic the protective structure normally provided by fallen timber, leaf litter and dense groundcover. Manufactured in Australia from natural cardboard, the ReHabitat Pod contains no plastics or coatings and is designed to biodegrade naturally over time, leaving no long-term waste or retrieval requirements. Camera monitoring across deployment sites has recorded a range of native species using ReHabitat Pods, including bush rats, bandicoots, antechinus, pygmy possums, skinks, monitors and other native fauna. Monitoring continues as deployment expands across restoration and conservation projects throughout Australia. For best ecological outcomes, ReHabitat recommends deploying Pods in loose clusters rather than as isolated units, creating a network of connected refuge points for wildlife. Key Benefits Provides immediate habitat for native fauna Supports biodiversity outcomes in disturbed landscapes Mimics natural ground-level refuge habitat Plastic-free and biodegradable No retrieval or disposal required Suitable for post-fire recovery and rehabilitation projects Australian made Lightweight, flat-packed and easy to deploy Use Cases Post-fire landscape recovery Mine rehabilitation projects Biodiversity offset programs Threatened species recovery projects Conservation reserves and sanctuaries Revegetation projects requiring habitat outcomes Environmental restoration works For best results, secure each pod using biodegradable weed mat pins pushed through the cardboard skirt that sits flush against the ground around the outside of the unit. As a general guide: 3 biodegradable pins per pod are recommended for most installations 2 pins may be sufficient in sheltered or low-wind locations Additional pins may be required in exposed or high-wind environments We recommend using BioTek Biodegradable Pins to maintain a fully biodegradable installation and eliminate the need for future site retrieval. Help restore habitat from day one with the ReHabitat Pod – a simple, biodegradable solution for supporting native wildlife during landscape recovery.
