Cortile's Gathered Hush

There is a hush that gathers in a room once the eye finds its centre, this is built to hold that hush. Frame steps inside frame: ivory yielding to taupe, taupe cooling into grey-blue, each border a degree nearer to stillness. The weavers of Jodhpur knot it by hand, wool catching the light unevenly, brightened at intervals by a thread with a quieter sheen, so the pattern shifts as afternoon turns to evening. Laid beneath a dark oak table, its nested borders hold their own against a Georgian cornice, or against the flat line of a concrete ceiling, present, never competing.
