Grotesque " Fall Into Decay " Tank Top Rising from the diseased foundations of the early Swedish death metal underground comes Grotesque—the pre-At the Gates band fronted by the late Tomas “Goatspell” Lindberg. Formed in Gothenburg during the late 1980s, Grotesque emerged before Swedish death metal was polished, categorized, or exported across the world. Their sound was primitive, blasphemous, and infected by early death metal, black metal, and violent European thrash. Raw, sinister riffs crawled from a colder grave, capturing a scene still mutating deep beneath the surface. The band’s 1989 rehearsal demo, The Black Gate Is Closed, preserved Grotesque in its most savage and unfiltered form. Those recordings, the cult Incantation EP, and other material were later gathered on In the Embrace of Evil—an essential document of the band’s brief but enormously influential existence. Grotesque became one of the crucial roots of the Gothenburg death metal movement. Following the band’s dissolution, vocalist Tomas Lindberg co-founded At the Gates, carrying the same scorched intensity into a new era of Swedish extreme metal.
