An Oribe ware bowl made in the Edo period. The stepped body and hand-curved rim of the mouth express the boldness of Oribe ware. Oribe's unique shape is that the rim of the mouth, which was originally nearly circular, is bent inward to create a square shape. The tiered surface of the vessel is decorated with cobalt dyeing, with a picture of what appears to be a landscape or portrait on the bottom, a floral design around it, and floral patterns and vertical stripes on the folded edge. The whole piece is coated with a warm, slightly greyish glaze with fine crackle-glazing. The bottom has Mino-specific legs on three sides, leaving large marks for support during firing. In Oribe, where Kaiseki cuisine was elaborate, this shape was often seen in Mukozuke, and this dish is thought to have been plated in the same way, albeit on a slightly larger scale. There is no conspicuous flaws. It has good luster throughout and is in good condition.
