Rosquillas
Few things are more distinctly Nicaraguan than rosquillas enjoyed with a cup of coffee. Made primarily from corn and cheese, rosquillas are deeply rooted in Nicaragua’s everyday culture. They can be found throughout the country, but are most famously associated with Somoto, where generations of makers have perfected them. Across Nicaragua, the name Rosquillas Somoteñas has become a mark of authenticity and quality – a sign that they come from the region known for making them best. Rosquillas is more than a cigar named after that tradition. At the heart of the blend is rare tobacco grown in Somoto itself, connecting the cigar to the same land that made its namesake famous. Creating a cigar that truly evoked a rosquilla took several years of blending and refinement. It could not simply be sweet, nor could its creaminess resemble an ordinary dessert cigar. The defining character of a rosquilla comes from the balance between toasted corn and cheese: gently sweet, warmly toasted, creamy, and distinctly savory. That balance was the challenge. The sweetness had to remain natural and restrained. The corn note had to be recognizable without becoming harsh or dry. Most importantly, the creaminess needed a savory quality – more reminiscent of cheese, warm grain, and baked corn than vanilla, frosting, or conventional confectionery sweetness. The finished cigar captures that contrast: natural sweetness, toasted corn, warm grain, and rich savory creaminess, all shaped around rare Somoto tobacco. It is a cigar inspired by one of Nicaragua’s most recognizable foods and created for its most natural companion – a smooth cup of coffee. Two Expressions of a Nicaraguan Tradition Rosquillas Claro The Claro is inspired by the classic golden, ring-shaped rosquilla. It presents the brighter and more delicate side of the blend, emphasizing creamy tobacco, toasted corn, warm grain, and restrained natural sweetness. Its savory creaminess recalls the combination of corn and cheese at the heart of a traditional rosquilla, creating a profile that is comforting, distinctive, and naturally suited to coffee. Rosquillas Maduro The Maduro takes its inspiration from the solid, disc-shaped version with a dark, caramelized sugar center. Its darker wrapper introduces greater richness, roasted depth, and browned-sugar sweetness while preserving the savory corn-and-cheese character essential to the blend. The result is a fuller interpretation, balancing caramelized sweetness with toasted grain, roasted corn, and deep, savory creaminess. One reflects the familiar golden ring. The other reflects the darker, sugar-centered disc. Together, they tell two sides of the same Somoteño tradition. Perfected over several years and made with rare tobacco from Somoto, Rosquillas is a tribute to Nicaragua through flavor, culture, and terroir.
