The Story Behind the Kalighat temple in old Calcutta, the patuas painted fast. Cheap paper, a few pigments, a brush that never lifted. They made images for pilgrims — gods, mostly. But between the gods they painted something else: the fat babu with his mistress. The priest and the scandal that swallowed a city. The wife with the upper hand. These were not devotional pictures.
