William Robinson Viola, Plumstead London – 1924, No. 103
A fine English viola by William Joseph Robinson (1880–1960) of Plumstead, South London, dated A.D. 1924, no. 103, labelled and initialled “W.R.” in ink by the maker. Robinson was a self-taught craftsman, mentored by dealers Dykes & Sons, who completed around 40 violas over his career — making each example a relatively rare find. His instruments are consistently praised for their quick response, vibrant tone, and fine materials. This example has a two-piece back of faint medium curl with matching wood in the sides and head, a table of medium/fine grain, and a plum-red varnish over a golden ground. The back measures 14 1/8″ (35.90cm). Provenance: In the same family for almost 100 years. Purchased new in 1924 by the vendor’s grandfather, Arthur Thomas, a violinist in the onboard orchestra of the SS Minnetonka (White Star Line), which sailed London/Boulogne–New York from 1924 to 1934. The original 1924 purchase receipt accompanies the instrument.
