1990s Gianfranco Ferre Boutique Indigo Satin and Jacquard Trousers

These striking indigo-blue satin trousers were designed by Gianfranco Ferré in the late 1990s or possibly early 2000s. They bear the Ferré Jean Boutique label, a high-end boutique designation rather than a diffusion range, and the quality of the materials and finishing is immediately apparent. Their elaborate design draws on traditional denim, Western dress and equestrian clothing, combining lustrous indigo satin with contrasting orange topstitching, jacquard panels and supple suede. Brown and indigo-blue jacquard decorates the waistband and extends over the tops of the legs in shapes reminiscent of Western chaps. Buttery chocolate-brown suede panels run along the inner legs, recalling traditional jodhpurs, with further suede detailing where the jacquard meets the satin at the waist. The gold-tone hardware is embossed “FERRE jean boutique”, including the fittings on the rear pockets. The trousers fasten at the centre back with a gold-tone zip. At the rear are slip pockets outlined with dark brown arrow-shaped detailing alongside patch pockets. The combination of shaped panels, contrasting fabrics, specialist trims and complex finishing makes these a particularly accomplished example of Ferré’s work for his name sake brand. The trousers are in excellent vintage condition. Composed of 51% acetate, 45% polyamide and 4% other fibres, with a polyester-blend contrast fabric and a lining of 65% polyester and 35% cotton. They are labelled a size 32/46 but run smaller, particularly through the hips, and we believe they are best suited to approximately a UK 12 or US 8. Notes on Designer: Gianfranco Ferré trained as an architect at Milan’s Politecnico before establishing his eponymous fashion house in 1978. His architectural background remained central to his work, particularly in his use of structure, proportion, unusual combinations of materials and highly accomplished construction. In 1989 he was appointed Artistic Director of Christian Dior, where his first haute couture collection was awarded the prestigious Dé d’Or.
