SLTF Ryecroft - Variable Sans Serif Typeface

SLTF Ryecroft is a modern grotesk sans serif in 9 weights, 9 true italics and a variable font. I wanted a sans that could carry a whole brand on its own. Wide open counters, a low contrast skeleton and terminals cut clean, so it holds together at 8pt in a caption and at 400pt on a poster. The Thin is fine enough to feel like a drawn line. The Black is heavy enough to stop a page. Everything in between is doing the actual work. The italics are not slanted romans. They are drawn as true italics, and the two-story roman a becomes a single-story a in the italic, which changes the rhythm of a line of text far more than the angle does. Nine of them, one for every roman weight. The variable font has two axes. Weight runs from 100 to 900, and an Italic axis takes you from upright to italic, with the alternate letterforms swapping in as you cross over. One file, the full range, and every point in between the named instances. Over 750 glyphs per style, with extensive Latin coverage: Western, Central and South Eastern European, Vietnamese, Sámi, Pan African and IPA. Old style figures, tabular figures, fractions, arrows, case sensitive forms and a full set of currency symbols. It behaves in long text and it performs at display sizes, which is a harder combination to get right than it sounds. Real italics. They are drawn separately, with a single-story a replacing the two-story roman form, plus reshaped letters through the rest of the lowercase. How does the variable font work? It carries two axes. Weight from 100 to 900, and Italic from 0 to 1. Sliding the Italic axis swaps in the true italic letterforms rather than slanting the upright ones.
