Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Safety Program

The Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) Safety Program establishes requirements for protecting employees who may be exposed to hydrogen sulfide gas during workplace operations. H2S is a highly toxic, flammable, colorless gas that may accumulate in confined spaces, tanks, pits, sewers, process equipment, oil and gas operations, wastewater systems, and other areas where hydrogen sulfide may be present. Because exposure can rapidly cause serious illness, unconsciousness, or death, the program emphasizes H2S hazard recognition, atmospheric monitoring, exposure prevention, and emergency response. The program addresses hydrogen sulfide exposure limits, H2S gas detection and monitoring, personal gas monitors, alarm levels, respiratory protection, ventilation, confined spaces, restricted areas, wind direction, buddy systems, personal protective equipment (PPE), and emergency escape and rescue procedures. Employees must understand that odor cannot be relied upon to detect H2S because exposure can impair the sense of smell. Required atmospheric testing and continuous monitoring must be performed where hazardous concentrations may develop, and employees must immediately respond to H2S alarms according to established procedures. The program also addresses employee responsibilities, equipment inspection and calibration, respiratory protection, emergency communication, evacuation, rescue precautions, and H2S safety training to help prevent hydrogen sulfide exposure, poisoning, and fatalities.
