Jun Takahashi took the language of punk — patching, repair, scavenged fabric, military clothing and things that appear almost homemade — and pushed it into a fully realized collection without cleaning away the imperfections that gave those references meaning. this jacket captures that particularly well. from a distance it reads almost entirely as a black military field jacket. closer inspection reveals layers of tonal patches, symbols, zippers, different pocket constructions and graphics, before the brightly woven textile suddenly breaks through at the hem. even the loose threads are allowed to remain visible. more than twenty years later, SCAB remains a reference point for the kind of reconstructed and intentionally imperfect clothing that has become commonplace in contemporary fashion. pieces this complete are less interesting to us simply because they're “archive” and more because they still communicate exactly what made early Undercover so influential.
