Indigo Dye Workshop At Quixote Farmshop 32870 Rincon Ranch Road, Pauma Valley, CA 92061 Saturday, September 19 11 am-3 pm This class is appropriate for ages 12 and up Light bites and beverages (included) will be served at 11, followed by workshop. Taught by Los Angeles designer and creative Kari Bradberry: In this class I will be walking you through the steps of Indigo dying. You will learn various Shibori techniques of folding and binding the fabric to create resist. Everyone gets a turn dipping their creation into the indigo vat, pulling it out to oxidize and then to unbind for the best part; the pattern reveal! You will get to go home with your design. Class provides: gloves, indigo vat, binding supplies and your choice of dying either: one tote bag and one tea towel or four napkins. Please wear old clothes as this can be a messy craft. Shibori is a Japanese manual resist dyeing technique, which produces patterns on fabric. In Japan, the earliest known example of cloth dyed with a shibori technique dates from the 8th century; it is among the goods donated by the Emperor Shōmu to the Tōdai-ji inNara. Until the 20th century, not many fabrics and dyes were in widespread use in Japan. The main fabrics were silk and hemp, and later cotton. The main dye was indigo and, to a lesser extent, madder and purple root. Shibori and other textile arts, such as tsutsugaki, were applied to all of these fabrics and dyes. Bio: I’m a footwear designer by day, and a textile Dyer by night. I started experimenting with different dyes a few years ago, and I just can’t stop! Most recently, I’ve been experimenting with natural dyes from food scraps (avocado stones and peels and turmeric) and local plants (eucalyptus and jacaranda flowers). I love the reveal part the best. It’s addicting to unwrap the textile and see how the dye has taken to the fabric in so many unique patterns. I also love that dyeing a stained shirt or tea towel gives it a new life.
