From designer Rik: I grew up in an era when the two great Sci-Fi franchises were at war. Fans chose sides and sneered at the “losers” on the opposite team. It was silly. Nowadays fandom is expansive enough that it’s okay to love both. I’ve always loved the retrofuturistic notion of designing screens and controls for spaceships. Fifty years ago the entertainment industry struggled to conceive of what might replace buttons and dials. The WIMP (windows, icons, menus, pointer) style of graphical user interface was just being designed at Xerox PARC in 1973. It was the standard for a long run, but now that so many of our screens are touchscreens (like those on a certain bridge in a certain generation), our own standard controls are shifting too. Each side of this car represents the interfaces of two of our sci-fi favs. Kit includes: Pattern and Yarn to make this super nerdy sci-fi scarf. Yarn: Queensland United (fingering weight, cotton/wool blend; 250 yards per ball,): two balls in black and half a ball each in red, orange, yellow, aqua, gray, and white. Note: pattern is mainly charts. Knowledge/experience of doubleknitting required for making this scarf.
