Hampton Court Tree of Life Red and Natural Crewelwork

A sumptuous and heavy double cloth construction, with wool motifs embroidered in crewelwork fashion on a cotton base, a style which became popular in the seventeenth century aristocratic homes, featuring swirling leaves and florets, motifs which became popular as extensions of the historical tree of life design. This fabric faithfully reproduces the design and original colours of a set of English crewelwork bed hangings, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century, held in the V&A Museum archives in London.
