What Is Jindai Wood? Jindai wood refers to timber that has remained buried underground for more than 3,000 years due to natural disasters. During this long period, the wood gradually develops a deep dark-brown coloration. Most Jindai wood is discovered purely by chance during land development or river improvement projects, making it extremely rare and difficult to obtain. It survives without decaying only when several exceptional conditions coincide, such as being buried in moist soil near a river and completely cut off from oxygen. This particular piece is made from beech buried deep underground by an eruption of Mount Chōkai, located on the border between Akita and Yamagata Prefectures. While buried, the naturally pale beech wood gradually changed to a soft, dark-brown tone and developed beautiful spalting patterns, making it an especially rare material. Beech rarely becomes Jindai wood, as most ancient buried woods are naturally hard and rich in oils. However, exceptionally dense clay soil can create rare examples such as this. Beech is known as the “dam of the forest” because of its remarkable ability to retain water. Its naturally beautiful pale timber has also earned it the title “Queen of the Forest.” In Greek mythology, beech was regarded as a sacred tree dedicated to Zeus, god of the sky, and is said to symbolize dignity, prosperity, honor, victory, and foresight. In Nordic folklore, elves were said to favor beech wood for making staffs and wands, drawing upon its creative magical energy.
