It completely dominated over all its adversaries in 1941 and early 1942. It was very efficient in raids as a low altitude escort fighter and quickly gained fame among the Allied pilots. During the war other versions of the Zero came along, but the Type 21 at the beginning was the most important combat service unit. At the end of hostilities many Type 21 Zeroes were used by the Imperial Japanese Navy at the beginning of kamikaze operations.
