Sylt Lighthouse

When I was looking for a subject for this latest tutorial, I had in mind that it should be a grade 1, so when I spotted this photo of a lighthouse situated on the island of Sylt in Northern Germany, it seemed ideal. First of all, there’s a big colourful sky for us to get stuck into, which contrasts perfectly with the more detailed structure of the distinctive red and white striped lighthouse. It’s particularly important with this painting to use the shadow carefully, as it really helps to describe the cylindrical nature of the building, and I deliberately left the foreground quite loose so as not to detract from the focal point. All in all, a really enjoyable project. Happy Painting, Geoff.
