Fretwork Squares Sterling Silver Dangle Earrings

These bold Fretwork Square Silver Dangle Earrings were handmade by Simone around 20 years ago as part of a jewellery exhibition collection she created to explore historical decorative metalwork forms. The intricately hand-cut sterling silver panels were inspired by Victorian-era renderings of ornamental metalwork from different historical periods. Simone chose the source imagery specifically because of its connection to traditional hand-crafted metalworking techniques. Each square panel was painstakingly saw-pierced by Simone by hand in sterling silver before being lightly domed inwards to create depth and subtle movement. Hung on their points, the square forms create a strong architectural silhouette with a distinctly Gothic revival character. These earrings began life as exhibition necklace components rather than commercial jewellery designs. For the From the Archives collection, Simone reworked the original exhibition panels into a one-of-a-kind pair of statement earrings for the From The Archives collection. The fretwork intentionally retains an organic handmade feel. Slight variations in the lines, visible saw marks and subtle sanding traces reveal the labour-intensive process behind the finished pieces. The earrings have been polished to a bright and shiny silver finish and are suspended from handmade sterling silver ear wires. Although not oversized, the dense pierced patterning gives these earrings strong visual presence and an unmistakable studio jewellery sensibility.
