There is something almost prehistoric about these flowers sculptural, strange and resilient. Rather than painting them directly from observation, I began working from memory, allowing their forms to become exaggerated, fragmented and gradually absorbed into the surrounding abstraction. Layers of muted greens, dusty pinks, burgundy, turquoise and earthy neutrals are built up, scraped back and painted over. Some flowers remain recognizable, while others appear only as traces, creating the feeling of vegetation emerging from and disappearing back into the landscape. The large scale gives the painting a physical presence. From a distance, the proteas anchor the composition; up close, the surface reveals loose brushwork, drips, scratches and unexpected passages of colour. Ancient Bloom reflects an ongoing shift in my practice — from depicting nature toward painting the memory and sensation of being surrounded by it. Original artwork one of a kind.
