Crowns

It is impossible to imagine a king without his crown. A symbol of authority, legitimacy, and prestige, it has accompanied rulers since the earliest civilizations. From the pharaohs of ancient Egypt to depictions of Christ, this emblem of power has roots in a particularly ancient symbolism, blending earthly sovereignty with a sacred dimension. For many centuries, the crown embodied both political and religious power. In France, its history is intertwined with that of the Capetian monarchy, while across Europe, the legendary "Crown of Charlemagne" holds a foundational place in the imagination of royal and imperial power. Over time, various forms have emerged: open or closed crowns, royal or imperial, each expressing a specific status, function, or ambition. Alongside the evolution of this emblem, coronation ceremonies grew increasingly important. From the Middle Ages until the early 19th century, these spectacular rites combined symbols, liturgy, and theatrical displays of power to publicly affirm the sovereign’s legitimacy. Through these celebrations, the crown became much more than a simple ornament: it represented the visible embodiment of authority.
