Canvas size: 24 x 40 inches Geoff Hunt writes: "The battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 was bad enough to experience, but many of the participants thought that the storm which began on the following day was worse. It blew with extreme violence for several days while crews of exhausted men battled to save ships, British, French and Spanish, often badly damaged ships, often with hundreds of wounded men on board. During this storm seven ships went down or were wrecked on the coast of Spain with enormous loss of life. Here we see HMS Victory on the morning of the 22nd just before the storm began in earnest, but contending with the heavy swell that had been noted during the battle. The ship has sustained serious damage but is not in immediate danger; shortly she will be taken in tow by the relatively undamaged Polyphemus and then Neptune, reaching Gibraltar on 29th October. Vice-Admiral Nelson having been killed, though his body remains on board, Victory has reverted to being what is known as a 'private ship', so carries a long pendant at the masthead but no admiral's flag. The horizon is dotted with ships - the frigate Sirius counted 46 in sight at 7 am - many damaged, some taken in tow..." A larger photo is available on request.
