Day/Night Dublin: A Photobook by Young Photographers
'Day/Night Dublin' brings together the work of eight young photographers who took part in Dare to Dream, a week-long creative programme exploring photography, creativity, self-expression and belonging. Images reproduced in this book appear courtesy of photographers: Abbie Martin Páraic McMorrow Nova James Sydney McCann Daragh Hickey Aoife Hayden Emmy Sherry Claire Nawrat Led by Superprojects Curatorial Fellow, Dublin-based artist, filmmaker and curator Fatoumata Gandega, Dare to Dream engaged with young people enrolled in Youthreach Dublin. Over the course of one week, the group worked with artist Darragh Shanahan, education and exhibition manager and artist at Photo Museum Ireland, to learn about analogue photography. They drew inspiration about how to portray themselves and their lives from photo books on display in the bookshop and 'The Forbidden Sun', Robert Ellis’s exhibition in the main gallery space. With support from artists Sabrina Faria, Frank Sweeney and Robert Ellis, they shot a roll of black and white film and learned the skills needed to develop, enlarge and print their own images in the Photo Museum Ireland darkroom, under the supervision of Darragh Shanahan. Alongside the practical workshops, the group took part in gallery and studio visits at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and explored what it means to be a professional artist, learning and being inspired by the ways in which lens-based artists develop and present their work. This book reflects the photographers’ interests in themes like music, counterculture movements and queer and underground scenes and was partly inspired by 'Punk, Goth, Rebel, Queer Zine' by photographer Al Fartukh. The project was produced by Superprojects in partnership with Photo Museum Ireland and Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. Special thanks to Youthreach NGGS and teacher Donal Talbot. This project was funded by Dublin City Council through a Project Award. Superprojects is funded by the Arts Council.
