A late 18th century, low, two panel Japanese screen long and narrow in proportion, its surface covered in gold leaf on paper laid in a soft grid of squares. Over time the leaf has softened and deepened, and the surface is warm and uneven, with shifting tones of gold and bronze. A slim black lacquered frame holds it in place. Its shape sits somewhere between screen and horizontal artwork. It can be placed on a shelf, console or hung on the wall. The reverse is stencilled in a dense, radiating pattern. Details Origin: Japan. Period: Circa late 18th century. Materials: Gold leaf on paper, black lacquered frame. Dimensions: L 184 cm x H 28.5 cm x D 2 cm (two panels of 91.2 cm each). Condition: Age-related wear throughout. Marks, small holes and later repairs to the gold leaf panels, with repairs and reinforcement to the stencilled reverse. Losses to the lacquered frame. Wall hanging instructions will be provided.
