Shino Chawan by Haruhiko Tsukamoto

A Shino Chawan by Haruhiko Tsukamoto, a ceramic artist based in Toki City. The surface is shaped with bold shinogi carving, and the Shino glaze flows, gathers, and fires along these ridges to create a wide range of expressions. Within the soft white glaze, reddish-brown, gray, and scorched tones emerge in complex layers, revealing a different landscape from every angle. Carbonization during firing has also produced metallic, luster-like effects across parts of the surface. Depending on the light, these areas shift between purple, silver, and muted gold, giving the bowl a strikingly contemporary character that departs from conventional images of Shino ware. The interplay of the carved form, Shino glaze, and the imaginative possibilities of carbonization pushes the work beyond tradition, resulting in a bold and avant-garde expression of Shino.
