Superman Rhodactis Mushrooms

Superman Rhodactis Mushrooms, Rhodactis sp., are corallimorpharians known for their broad fleshy oral discs and textured surfaces covered with numerous short, branching or knob-like pseudotentacles. This specimen displays a pale blue-green to turquoise base densely covered with brilliant orange-red pseudotentacles, producing the striking contrasting coloration reflected in the “Superman” name. The oral disc is heavily textured, with longer marginal tentacles and raised central structures adding dimension to the mushroom’s appearance. Rhodactis species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that supply much of their nutritional energy, while they can also capture suspended plankton and small particulate foods. Because coloration and external morphology alone do not permit dependable species-level identification within the genus, Rhodactis sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation. Care Guide: Rhodactis sp. generally performs well under low to moderate reef lighting with low to moderate, indirect water movement. Excessive direct flow can prevent the mushroom from fully expanding or cause it to detach from its substrate. Place the coral on secure rockwork where it can expand without rubbing against neighboring corals. Maintain stable temperature and salinity, with measurable and reasonably stable nitrate and phosphate levels. Rhodactis mushrooms obtain much of their energy through photosynthesis but can also benefit from occasional appropriately sized planktonic or finely chopped marine foods. These mushrooms may gradually expand or reproduce across nearby rock surfaces, so allow room for colony growth. Avoid placing delicate neighboring corals directly against the expanded mushroom tissue.
