Creative Dialogue in the Classroom: Poetry-Based Teaching and Learning Approaches

FREE WORKSHOP! | IN PERSON Wednesday 07 October 2026 14h00 – 16h00 Presenter: Dr Adam Levin Traditionally, poetry has been taught in schools primarily as a way of developing and assessing learners’ reading, language and analytical skills. In this free workshop however, Adam Levin will explore how a greater engagement with poetry’s themes and content can foster learners’ understanding of the curriculum’s real-world relevance, while also building empathy, encouraging self-expression and developing critical thinking skills. Adam will explore new approaches to analysing and writing poetry in classroom settings. Drawing on work that is currently being undertaken by the South African Poetry Project (ZAPP), educators will get the opportunity to experiment with a range of activities that they can apply in creating dynamic, interdisciplinary and rewarding poetry learning experiences that can be adapted across a range of classroom contexts.
