The narrower 85 mm board puts more boards across the room, which keeps the character busy and textured. Solid timber flooring made from New Zealand beech, with a tongue and groove profile in our Heritage grade: 85 x 19 mm, supplied uncoated. Heritage has more character than our Natural grade: small pinholes, darker markings and more variation between boards. Are the pinholes a problem? The pinholes are a natural feature of beech. They were made in the standing tree by a native beetle that needs wet, living wood, long before milling. Once the timber is kiln dried the holes are inert: nothing lives in them, and they can't spread to other timber in your home. Beech is also naturally resistant to common house borer (NZ Farm Forestry Association). The pinholes are cosmetic and don't change how the boards lay, sand, finish or wear. Current timber stock Profiled to order from our kiln-dried, rough sawn red beech and beech heritage stock. Red beech has a Janka side hardness of 5.4 kN and silver beech 4.5 kN. How is solid timber flooring installed and finished? Install, then sand, then coat. Our flooring is supplied uncoated. An installer experienced with solid timber flooring can lay it using standard solid timber flooring practices, then sand it and apply your chosen finish. We are advocates of Osmo oils and Natural House Company oils, but there is a wide range of flooring oils, waxes and other finishes to choose from. The choice is yours to make with your installer, whether the floor is for your home or business.
